Using BioDetection System BV’s innovative DR CALUX® bioassay,
dioxin and dioxin-like compound levels can now be measured in just 2 mls of
serum or 4 mls of whole blood. As a result of extensive R&D work, BDS has
applied the very high sensitivity of its innovative DR CALUX®
bioassay to the analysis of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in human blood.
Processing just 4mls of whole blood or 2 mls of serum, we are able to achieve a
limit of quantitation of 20 pg TEQ/g lipid (LOD = 7 pg TEQ/g). By capturing the
low end of the human dioxins in blood range, epidemiological studies of
individual human blood dioxin levels using very small blood volumes is now
practical. Previously, similar analysis by HRGCMS has typically required 50 -
200 mls of blood in order to achieve adequate detection levels. This has meant
that studies have often been limited to using pooled blood samples or special
circumstances where large blood volumes could be justified. With this latest
development, blood dioxin levels can readily be measured in discreet individual
adults and potentially practically for the first time in infants. High
sensitivity in BDS' DR CALUX® bioassay, combined with low cost (ca.
Euro 240 per analysis) provides the future tool of choice for dioxins
epidemiology work.
BDS will be presenting information on this latest
development in the proceedings and at its exhibition booth at the annual Dioxin
conference in Berlin between 6 – 10 September 2004. For information
