E-NEWSLETTER - January 2008

Date: 2008-01-24

Launch of BDS’ newsletter

Dear reader,

We are happy to announce the first newsletter of BioDetection Systems offering you an overview of news on ‘biodetectors’. In our newsletter we will inform you about the state-of-the-art of innovative biological detection systems in the analytical world, including new applications and validation of existing methods. With increased interest and use of these assays in food-, environmental-, pharmaceutical-, public health and clinical analysis we will have ample material for our issues that so far are planned to appear three to four times a year. Most news items will be linked to BDS’ homepage, which we hope will become an important source of information on these innovative technologies. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions, comments, ideas and news items. We wish you pleasant reading.

With best regards,

Peter Behnisch and Bart van der Burg

This letter contains the following topics:

• International conference on biodetectors
• New business cooperations
• Meet BDS
• New products
• Selection of recent publications on CALUX® and other “Biodetectors”
• Upcoming events

International conference on biodetectors

At August 15, preceding the Dioxin 2008 conference in Birmingham, England, BDS will organise the 3rd International BioDetectors Conference in Amsterdam. This annually recurring event has attracted in the last two years more than 70 participants from all over the world. In contrast to previous years, the 3rd conference will be one day only with a morning program of presentations by well-known experts in the field of BioDetectors for environmental, feed/food, human biomonitoring, and doping. In the afternoon there will be a possibility to visit BDS’ laboratories and demonstrations of a range of CALUX technologies for different applications will be given. In Spring 2008 BDS will launch a call for abstracts and information about how to register for the 2008-conference.

New business cooperations

BDS is happy to announce the establishment of various new global partners to be able to meet the increasing demands and to further improve local services. A listing of all BDS’ global partners can be viewed at our homepage. click here for list

Meet BDS

There will be various possibilities to meet BDS personnel early in 2008. Among that there will be seminars in various countries. If you are interested in attending one of these seminars, please refer to the contact details given in the upcoming events section. If you are interested in more direct information by BDS, please contact BDS or one of our global partners.

New products

Reference materials

Reference materials have been generated for food and feed analysed for dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs. The materials have been analysed by 21 DR CALUX laboratories and 2 HRGC/HRMS laboratories. Prices are: one for 240 €; three for 590 €. A complete listing of products can be viewed at our homepage. click here for list

Panel of CALUX cells

Through our continuous R&D activities we now have expanded the panel of CALUX cell lines extensively. These assays can be used for a wide variety of applications and in coming issues of BioDetectors we will be presenting application notes to give you a flavour of what these cell lines could mean for your work. The extension of this highly standardised panel of reporter cell lines will be a continuing activity in the coming years, and already several new assays are currently being developed (as indicated in white). Please contact us for further information on any of these assays. We would be happy to discuss your specific needs.

DR CALUX® bioassay analysis and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) showed comparable results in paired breast milk samples.

Bogers, R., De Vries-Buitenweg, S., Geuijen, I., De Roode, D., Kuiper, R., Van der Linden, S., Puiker, L., Murk, A.J., Van der Burg, B. & Legler, J. (2007). An in vitro/in vivo screening assay as a sensitive tool to assess endocrine disruptive activity in surface water. Environment International 33, 292-301.

This study on estrogenic activity in river water showed that the results obtained by the ER CALUX assay are consistent with that of an in vivo fish study using the same water samples.

This study determines the mechanism of interference of glucocorticoids in the DR CALUX assay. This information is used to guarantee the selectivity of the assay using new matrices, such as clinical material.
