"DIOXIN 2009"

Date: August 23-29, 2009
Venue: Beijing

In this yearly symposium the most recent developments were presented on adequate and effective biological and chemical methods to detect the presence, nature and magnitude of several POPs.

Our colleague Takigami from NIES in Japan applied a panel of CALUX assays to marine harbor sediments in Asia (Takigami et al).

BDS presented a few international examples of crisis situations and management by using cell based screening method DR CALUX®  (Behnisch et al).

Somaya from CMES from the Ehime University presented a mussel watch program – monitoring of dioxin-like compounds in Asian coastal waters (Somaya et al).

Schneider from the Inst of Environmental Research from the RWTH Aachen presented the assessment of dioxin-like toxicity in contaminated soils by different industrial processes (Schneider et al).

Shyu explained the first evaluation study of the DR CALUX at the Taiwan Agricultural Chemicals and Toxic Substances Research Institute (TACTRI). They analyzed by DR CALUX several eggs and fish feed samples from Taiwan, showing that all quality criteria’s set-up by the regulators are fulfilled (Shyu et al).

“Biological Detection Systems for hormone-like compounds in the aquatic – basis for the regulatory’’

Date: June, 11-12th 2009
Venue: Eawag, Duebendorf, Swiss

The Workshop informed about the current  international developments for the testing of hormone-active substances in the environment. Several key speakers presented state-of-the-art bioanalysis  methods, how hormone-active substances in waters can be measured. Also a report was published in German language giving a comprehensive comparison of test systems and possible test strategies for regulators and users. BDS was invited to present our wide range of biodetectors for hormone-like compounds (click here).

“BioDetectors for environmental and feed/food control”

Date: March 16th, 2009
Venue: University of Moscow.

This symposium, organized by Dr. Denis Feshkin at the Moscow University, brought together many local experts for dealing with POPs. At this interesting meeting the most recent developments were presented on state-of-the-art and effective biological methods to detect dioxins and endocrine disrupting chemicals by CALUX® panel.

“Experiences with PAN-European Monitoring”. New Emerging Pollutants and Effect-based analyses are in the further focus of the NORMAN Network as well as an expert team of European National Monitoring experts.

Date: 8-10th December 2010
Venue: at JRC in Ispra.

In this meeting with many National Experts from the EU, the future strategy of testing of new emerging pollutants in water and sediments for monitoring programs regarding the latest Water Framework Developments have been intensively discussed. The experts concluded that there is a need for low-cost, high-quality and high capacity screening technologies for monitoring of surface water and sediments in European Waters and European Water Frameworks.  The need of integrating effect-based bioanalysis tools in routine testing for water quality has been agreed by all participating members. BDS is performing such analyses since many years with proven records, and will participate in these monitoring programs. BDS was invited to present our wide range of biodetectors for new emerging pollutants (please contact us for more information).
