A few key themes and
points which came out during
the Dioxin 2003 week
in Boston are listed below.
 |
Food and Feed : In the 4th international
HRGCMS inter-laboratory validation study for food items, poor performance was
reported. Only 16 out of 90 participants (18%) were able to meet the study
criteria for all three matrices tested. For the cheese sample, which was the
only sample in the range of the actual regulatory limit values, only 20 out of
83 participants (24%) were able to meet the study criteria. A call was made to
include more materials with dioxin levels around the limit values for the next
study. With HRGCMS detailed as the “confirmatory” method in legislation, this
raises serious questions as to how legal compliance will be confirmed. Reports

CALUX® highlights from Dioxin 2003
· The
CALUX® bioassay again had a higher profile at Dioxin 2003 than in
previous years, with, for the first time, a full session being allocated to
CALUX;
The range of
topics involving BDS’ CALUX® bioassay was broad
including:
o
cross-validation with HRGCMS;
o inter-laboratory validation studies;
o use of CALUX® REPs;
o use for
monitoring wood waste; o PCBs
destruction technologies; o investigation
of new AhR agonists; and o assessment of
extraction methods.
· A paper was
presented by Eppe et
al showing that for a 3rd party
user, BDS’ CALUX® bioassay can meet the requirements of the European
legislation
· Finally, a range
of new, highly sensitive and highly specific CALUX® bioassays was
shown, targeting hormones. |
