| New Jersey Forced to Act Against Possible PCB Contamination |
 |
| February 2003 |
February 3, 2003 - The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has had to issue
another warning about contaminated sea-food in its waters.
The State Department closed off areas of its waters, following the discovery
of a broken main releasing sewage. The areas closed, Barnegat Bay in Ocean County, contain
shellfish beds. The warning comes in the wake of recent contamination issues: in
July 2002, the State issued an advisory about unsafe levels of mercury in fresh
water bass, walleye and lake trout, and earlier in the year, a warning was issued
about dioxin contamination in the blue claw crab. In addition, on the 28 January of
this year, the Government published new health advisories about safe eating practices
and preparation of fish, due to potential health risks associated with PCBs.
